The British Library, otherwise known as the Fovárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtár near Kálvin Tér, is a hot spot among the students in the 8th district. What’s special about this library though is that it’s also home to the British Library. It can be pretty hard (and expensive) to get your hands on some decent English literature in Budapest unless you’ve brought your entire book collection from home. There is a huge selection of classics as well as modern poetry, fiction, humour, magazines and TESL resources spread out on both the ground and first floors.
It’s free to get a visitor’s pass for the library but if you want to take any books of the library you have to pay a membership fee, about 3000 HUF for six months. Even if you don’t sign up for a membership, the library itself is an incredible building with some pretty regal reading rooms (check out the Gold Room on the second floor). If you need a quiet space to study, read, escape the cold or catch up on emails, this is your spot. There’s also a very reasonably priced café on the ground floor.
Remember: to sign up for a library membership you need proof of a Budapest address.
